The lesson of the parable follows Catholic social doctrine.  Neither son in the parable treated his father with respect and obedience.  Neither hypocrisy nor greed please God, but clearly the one who “changed his mind,” with all humiliation and humility and went into the fields, cheered his father’s heart more than the other.
